Privacy Policy

Short version: your audio goes to a speech recognition service to be turned into text, and we count how much you use the app. We do not keep what you dictate in order to count it, and we do not sell anything to anyone.

Your voice

Dictation is speech recognition, so the audio has to reach a recognizer. Which one depends on the engine you pick in the app.

• Default engine. The app opens a Chrome window that uses the browser's built-in speech recognition. Your audio goes from your machine to Google, under Google's own privacy terms. It does not pass through us and we never see it.
• Cloud engine. The recording is uploaded to Google Cloud Storage and transcribed by Google's chirp_2. The audio is uploaded directly from your machine. The resulting transcript is stored on our backend against your account, so that a failed or disputed job can be recovered and investigated, and it is billed per second against your balance.

If you would rather no transcript were kept on our side, use the default engine, which stores nothing with us at all.

What is on your machine

The note you dictate into, your settings, and your usage counters are files in the app's own folder on your computer. Text is placed on your clipboard when a dictation finishes, so it can be pasted. Nothing in this paragraph is uploaded anywhere.

Usage counters

The app counts how it is used, so we can see what people actually reach for and answer questions about usage. It is numbers only. Per day, it records:

• how long the microphone was on, how many dictations, how many words and characters
• how much time the window was open and how much time the app sat in the tray
• which language and engine were used, and whether a dictation was started by the hotkey, the tray or a button
• which hour of the day recording happened in, and how many spoken punctuation marks were used
• the app version and operating system

What you dictate is never part of this. No transcript, no word, no file name, no sentence, ever. The counters cannot reproduce anything you said, because none of it is stored in them.

Each install has a random identifier that we generate. It is not derived from your hardware. If your device is linked to a STT.bd account, the counters are recorded against that account, so usage can be looked up when you ask us about it.

You can change this in the app, under Account › Counting: send them, keep them on your machine only, or count nothing at all. Turning counting off does not limit the app in any way.

Your mobile number

Opening an account needs a mobile number, and a code is sent by SMS to check that the number is yours. It is stored as it is rather than hashed, because supporting you means reaching you back, and a hash cannot do that. It is the only personal data we hold.

The number is used for two things: verifying you when an account is opened or a new device is linked, and identifying you when you get in touch. No marketing messages are sent to it, and it is not given or sold to anyone.

Your account

An account is created when you ask for one and holds an account identifier, a hash of your account secret (never the secret itself), a public recharge code, a token per linked device, and a ledger of top-ups and charges.

Updates

The app checks for new versions from our download server. As with any request to any server, that means the request itself is visible to us: your IP address, and which version you are on.

What we do not do

• We do not sell or rent anything about you to anyone.
• We do not run advertising or advertising trackers.
• We do not use your dictation to train anything.
• We do not ask for your name or e-mail address.

Third parties

Speech recognition is Google's. Hosting, storage and the download server are Cloudflare's and Google Cloud's. They process data on our behalf under their own terms.

Deleting your data

Unlinking a device from the app removes its token. To delete an account, its transcripts, or the counters for an install, write to us and say what you want removed: zizdjbd@gmail.com

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected, the date at the top changes with it.
